研究概要

This research will analyze the amount of electricity that could be generated in the world by means of unconventional wind energy technologies. The research will identify the regions and conditions in which these technologies have advantages over conventional ones (turbines with horizontal axis).
The purpose of this research is to analyze the wind energy potential with unconventional technologies (such as airborne wind energy systems) at the global scale, and to identify the conditions and regions where these technologies are more feasible (compatibility with land use restrictions and larger energy output) than the conventional technology (grounded horizontal axis turbines) with a high spatial and temporal resolutions.

全体計画

The research will proceed as follows:
1) A review of unconventional wind energy technologies (starting with airborne wind energy systems), to identify representative technologies, their performance, the conditions and restrictions for their practical operation, and the mathematical formulation and parameters to calculate their electricity output; this step will provide the input data for the analysis in the second step.
2) The analysis of the energy potential for each representative technology identified in the first step, using geo-referenced (or “GIS”: geographic information system) data (including wind speed, topography, among others), and the parameters identified in the previous step for each technology; regional supply curves will be obtained for each representative technology, and used as the central values for the sensitivity analysis in the third step.
3) A sensitivity analysis of the energy potential for each of the representative technologies, to examine the variability of outcomes to a range of assumptions in input parameters.
4) A comparison of the outcomes from the previous steps, with the energy potential from conventional wind power technologies (grounded horizontal axis turbines), to evaluate the spatial and temporal conditions resolutions (~25 km mesh by hour across a year) where unconventional technologies are more feasible.
