Name of Society : Webinar: Advancing Planetary Epidemiology Through Earth Observations Name of Proceedings：In the Anthropocene epoch, the transgression of multiple planetary boundaries is triggering global environmental changes that pose risks to human health. When multiple environmental changes occur simultaneously in the same location, they interact, in some instances amplifying, and in others moderating each other’s impacts on human health. The study of such planetary health impacts requires approaches that stretch beyond the boundaries of the traditional methods of environmental epidemiology. This calls for a new approach, which we refer to as planetary epidemiology. The recent advancements in the availability of high-resolution (e.g., 10-300 m) Earth Observation data opens vast opportunities for studying health implications of large-scale environmental changes and their interactions at a fine spatial and temporal scales. This webinar is funded by the Future Earth and European Space Agency (ESA) joint program to explore the directions for advancing planetary epidemiology, and particularly the opportunities offered by the latest processed Earth Observation data products. Name of Society : The 93rd Annual Conference of the Japanese Society for Hygiene: International Symposium: Climate change connection to the health effects of ambient temperature and air pollution Name of Proceedings：According to the latest report on 10 new insights in climate science, climate change is responsible for many environmental changes that influence the health of animals, humans, and nature. Increases in heat waves, especially in areas conventionally not used to high heat are leading to a higher number of heat-related mortality. As this is occurring, there are gaps in attribution studies and available data across regions, as well as attributions of climate change to events impacting health indirectly. Due to a lack of available studies, there are insufficient policies developed to adapt to this new situation, which calls for the need to increase collaboration across sectors and borders. Future earth is a global initiative focused on advancing sustainability science. The Health Knowledge-Action Network (Health KAN), one of Future Earths Global Research Networks, has a diverse team with representatives from each populated continent to conduct research on planetary health. Endorsed topical Working Groups such as the one on "Health Governance" allow for Working Group members to benefit from the networks diverse expertise and communications. The connection with other 26 mostly disciplinary focused Global Research Networks and partner organizations of Future Earth allows for new types of research, synthesis, and policy reports that can inform transformations in our conventional socio-economic systems that would otherwise be very difficult to develop. More recent activities by the Health KAN include the development of a research agenda in the context of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development, as well as a scoping exercise that was conducted for an international partnership organization called the Belmont Forum (an organization aiming to mobilize funds to remove critical barriers to sustainability). The Health KAN conducted this work to inform the next round of the Collaborative Research Action on Climate, Environment, and Health (CRA CEH2). CRA CEH2 will be an opportunity available in 2023 for health researchers and other stakeholders to prioritize and work on a selection of relevant topics.
