Brief Description of Research
In future limnological research, it is important to focus on littoral ecosystems, which remain relatively understudied, and to advance analyses of the influences of watershed processes and meteorological conditions on these systems, thereby accumulating findings that contribute to watershed and littoral management.

Our laboratory has developed a variety of advanced methods for water quality analysis and environmental monitoring, including drone-based monitoring, a continuous porewater sampling system for bottom sediments, a gas collection system for sediment gas, visualization of sediment gas bubbles and burrow structures, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen isotope analyses of diverse materials, fast repetition rate fluorometry (FRRf) enabling in situ measurements of photosynthetic activity, and analyses of dissolved organic matter characteristics. By applying these environmental monitoring techniques, we aim to propose technologies and environmental restoration measures that can actively improve ecosystems, particularly sediment environments, and to verify their effectiveness. By integrating investigative and research methods for lake and river environments from basic to applied science, we will promote research that contributes to the soundness of watershed environments and the maximization of ecosystem services.

Furthermore, from the perspective of climate change adaptation research, it will become increasingly important to understand how river and lake ecosystems respond to droughts and floods, and how these responses may in turn affect downstream inner bays and similar water bodies. Using high-frequency data obtained from sensor loggers, we will analyze the impacts of flood events and rising water temperatures, and disseminate the results. At the same time, we will actively introduce statistical methods for estimating causal relationships among water quality variables, thereby building an innovative monitoring system for aquatic environments.
