Theme2
Theme name
Predicting and assessing of natural values from natural capital and ecosystem services of terrestrial ecosystems
Targets and summary
Targets: To predict and assess the natural values from natural capital and ecosystem services of terrestrial ecosystems in Japan.
Summary:Development of analytical procedures for the quantification and information mapping of ecosystem services in terrestrial ecosystems, as well as their modifying factors (direct and indirect), and assessment procedures as natural capital by utilizing the existing accumulated research data. Quantifying and informationally mapping ecosystem services, including cultural services (e.g. food culture, recreation, and environmental education), and assessing the roles of participatory ecosystem management, as well as both traditional and local knowledge. In addition, elucidating the interrelation between terrestrial and marine ecosystems in collaboration with Theme 3. Based on the research results, developing a submodel and tool for the modeling plans to be developed in Theme 1 that can be extended for each future scenario.
Subtheme structure
・2-1. Evaluating cultural services from ecosystems and the integration of multifaceted natural capital and ecosystem services
・2-2. Quantifying and predicting the provisioning and regulating of services from terrestrial ecosystems
・2-3. Evaluation of participatory options and the use of traditional and local knowledge for the management of natural capital and ecosystem services
・2-4. Evaluating natural capital and ecosystem services in the watershed and river ecosystems and the linkage with coastal ecosystems
