Brief Description of Research
- Establishing a Regime Inclusive of Future Generations and Monitoring with Sustainability Indicators
Inheriting a better society to future generations enhances the sustainability of our society. I study what kind of regime (institution, etc.) tends to suppress the human nature of short-termism and to consider future generations more. It is also important to monitor the status of society’s sustainability and use it for better decision making of the current generation. Research outcomes so far include a review of more than 1800 SD indicators, development of an nexus-type indicator framework (in Japanese), and an investigation of sustainable procurement schemes to identify concrete operational criteria.

- Transition to Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns and Sustainable Lifestyles
Although individual pro-environmental behaviors are important, individual power is not necessarily strong. Such behaviors are often constrained by consumption and production systems, economic system, infrastructure, and we need to pay attention to these constraints and create desired lifestyles to transform the current unsustainable systems. I have applied scenario approaches and idea generations methods to explore lifestyles and consumption and production patterns in the future. I also carried out research about strategic implementation for establishing a local system.

- Evaluation and Analysis of 3R (reduce, reuse, and recycle)/Circular Economy Policy and Waste Treatment System
The 3R policy enters the era of circular economy, in which three subsystems of resource use, material circulation, and waste management are expected to be integrated and transformed into a more circular form. In addition, the scale of waste management is to be optimized adapting to social changes such as population decrease. Therefore, I am conducting research on indicators of post-recycling-rate and development of a material flow model for municipal waste. Main achievements were published in reports such as evaluation of the Electrical Home Appliance Recycling Act in Japan, examination of collection systems with economic incentives (deposit-refund systems and reward points collection systems), stakeholders’ perception of the concept of extended producer responsibility (EPR). Material flow analysis of products and sustainable material management were studied, too.
