Policies Regarding Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-sharing at the National Institute for Environmental Studies

Under the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Nagoya Protocol, ensuring access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their utilization (i.e., access and benefit-sharing; hereafter referred to as “ABS”) is required for academic research.
Therefore, research institutions and researchers are required to implement the Nagoya Protocol appropriately.
To promote appropriate utilization of genetic resources, the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) has implemented “Basic Policy on Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-sharing at the National Institute for Environmental Studies“ and “Concepts and Guidelines for Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-sharing at the National Institute for Environmental Studies” to fulfill ABS requirements. Additionally, the NIES has established an Access and Benefit-Sharing of Genetic Resources Committee in order to institute NIES’s ABS policies and manage genetic resources in NIES.
