Wastes and Material Cycles Research Section
Research details
Researchers in this section have led work to draft technical standards and guidelines and develop technologies for the treatment and disposal of radioactive waste based on the Act on Special Measures concerning the Handling of Environment Pollution by Radioactive Materials, and have actively disseminated the outcomes of these efforts. Moving forward, they will contribute to scientific and technological aspects of safe interim storage of radioactive off-site waste by developing technologies for the long-term isolated storage and monitoring of radioactive off-site waste in interim storage facilities and the effective use of removed soil, and by conducting R&D on waste volume reduction and concentration technologies for eventual final disposal.
Material Cycles and Waste Treatment Verification Laboratory
- PurposeDevelopment of technologies for volume reduction, interim storage and final disposal of waste and removed soil contaminated with radioactive substances, and proof-of-concept experiment of methods for the long-term management of related facilities.
- FunctionEquipped with compact rotary electric furnace, lysimeter and other devices for the thermal treatment of waste and full-scale investigation of its behavior in landfills.
- Usage examplesUsed for research on decontaminating waste and soil for use as cement ingredients and other applications, and on safe interim storage and eventual disposal in landfills.
Waste Sample Pretreatment Room
- PurposePretreatment of waste and removed soil for subsequent analysis.
- FunctionEquipped with draft chambers for the safe handling of powders, acids, alkalis and organic solvents.
- Usage examplesUsed for research and development of technologies for the treatment and landfilling of waste etc.
Waste Sample Instrumental Analysis Room
- PurposeAnalysis of the properties of waste and removed soil.
- FunctionEquipped with pore size distribution analyzer, fluorescent X-ray analyzer, etc., enabling measurement of the physical and chemical properties of samples.
- Usage examplesUsed for research and development of technologies for the treatment and landfilling of waste etc.
