Nature-based Solutions (NbS) Research Program
This program aims to scientifically clarify the effectiveness of Nature-based Solutions (NbS), which use the functions of natural and human-made ecosystems to address social challenges, and to apply these findings to real-world community development. As climate change and population decline continue, the program explores new forms of social infrastructure that enable sustainable and disaster-resilient societies in harmony with nature.
Specifically, we will quantitatively assess ecosystem functions and develop technologies to enhance them. We will also systematize planning and implementation methods suited to the characteristics of different regions and river basins. In model areas, stakeholders from government, academia, industry, and local communities will work together to implement and evaluate NbS in practice. In addition, we will examine institutional and policy-related challenges and develop mechanisms, indicators, and financial approaches to support wider adoption.
Through these efforts, we aim to promote the broader use and expansion of NbS based on scientific evidence. The program will help conserve and restore natural capital in local areas, contribute to disaster preparedness and human well-being, and present a new model for building sustainable and resilient communities.
