Seriespinula

Seriespinula (Mehta & Raski, 1971) Khan et al., 1976 (ref. ID; 5848)

ref. ID; 5848

Diagnosis (emended)

Female body 0.32-55 mm. Annules 50-90. First few body annules fringed with spines then differentiated posteriorly into 8-16 longitudinal rows of spines in groups of up to four, becoming fringed again on tail. Head annules two, set off, smooth, crenate or spined. Lip region elevated, round. Stylet 49-125 µm. Vulval lips conical reaching spine contour. Tail 8-15 annules, conical pointed, VL/VB 1.5-2.3. (ref. ID; 5848)
  • Juveniles (fourth stage): Annules with 11-13 rows of semicircular scales with spine-tipped posterior extension. (ref. ID; 5848)
  • Males: Lateral incisures three, bursa small, spicules 40-47 µm. (ref. ID; 5848)

    Notes

Seriespinula differs from Ogma by having spine fringed extremities and longitudinal rows of body spines in groups of up to four. In Ogma scales begin on first body annule and continue unmodified to terminus in longitudinal rows. (ref. ID; 5848)

    9. Seriespinula tenuicaudatum (Siddiqi, 1961) Khan et al., 1976 (ref. ID; 5848)
Syn; Seriespinula impar Khan et al., 1976 (ref. ID; 5848)
    10. Seriespinula venustum (Mehta & Raski, 1971) Khan et al., 1976 (ref. ID; 5848)

Seriespinula seymouri (Wu, 1965) Khan et al., 1976 (ref. ID; 5848)

    Notes

The male of S. seymouri was described with two lateral incisures and a roughened tail terminus. Figures clearly indicate that the male of S. seymouri has three, not two, lateral incisures. The roughened tail terminus derived from numerous papilla-like projections. (ref. ID; 5848)

Seriespinula sokliense (Choi & Geraert, 1975) Khan et al., 1976 (ref. ID; 5848)

    See

    Seriespinula octozonale (ref. ID; 5848)

    Notes

Seriespinula sokliense cannot be differentiated from S. octozonale on the basis of number of annules (50-60 vs. 55-58), stylet length (109 µm vs. 97-112 µm), vulva position (annules 11-12 vs. 10-11) or number of spines (two or three) in nine vs. eight rows. The shape and structure of the head, tail, and spine arrangement seen through cross-sections are identical and S. sokliense therefore is considered a synonym of S. octozonale. (ref. ID; 5848)

Seriespinula tenuicaudatum (Siddiqi, 1961) Khan et al., 1976 (ref. ID; 5848)

    Synonym

Seriespinula impar Khan et al., 1976 (ref. ID; 5848)

    Notes

Stylet lengths (112-120 µm vs. 106-117 µm), number of annules (52-59 vs. 56-62), vulva position (annules 8-11 vs. 11-12), number of rows of spines (12 vs. 10-14), and head and tail structures of S. impar overlap with the measurements and descriptions provided for S. tenuicaudatum by Siddiqi (1961) and Edward and Misra (1965). Seriespinula impar is therefore synonymized with S. tenuicaudatum. (ref. ID; 5848)
