Trichospira

Trichospira Roux, 1899 (ref. ID; 2013)

Class Kinetofragminophora: Subclass Vestibulifera: Order Trichostomatida (ref. ID; 2013)

[ref. ID; 2013]
Body elongate ovoid, circular in cross-section, with many trichocysts below entire pellicular surface. Opening to vestibulum subapical. The cell is completely covered in short cilia in densely-packed longitudinal meridians, with a tuft of long caudal cilia. There is a pellicular rib bearing a series of long closely-set cilia which begin near the vestibulum and spiral clockwise around the body ending in a transverse ring in the posterior. Macronucleus ovoid, contractile vacuole in posterior. Most easily confused with Spirozona. Trichospira possesses trichocysts, the entrance to the vestibulum is very close to the body apex and the pellicular rib ends in a transverse ring. Spirozona does not have there features.
