Serpentichona

Serpentichona Jankowski, 1973 (ref. ID; 2013)

Class Kinetofragminophora: Subclass Hypostomata: Order Chonotrichida: Suborder Exogemmina (ref. ID; 2013)

[ref. ID; 2013]
Very elongate, cylindrical body attached by aboral end to crustaceans. The posterior region (pseudostyle) is distinctly elongate, narrow and free from any food vacuoles. There are no somatic cilia. The pre-oral funnel is large, wide but comparatively low and there is a tendency towards the under development of the whorl region (usually less than two and a half whorls but up to three and a half whorls). The rim of the pre-oral funnel is ledge-like folds on the whorl rim. In addition the body has several longitudinal rib-like folds. The macronucleus is rounded and reproduction is by exogenous budding. The genus is most easily confused with Spirochona and Cavichona. Serpentichona has only been recorded in Lake Baikal.
