Body outline shape irregularly oval (rarely elongate as in Amphileptus), laterally flattened. Ventral edge strongly convex on which the long slit-like oral aperture is situated. Dorsal edge either concave or less convex than ventral edge whose border is clear forming a C-shaped band lined with trichocysts. Ciliation uniform on both right (upper) and left (lower) surfaces. Single contractile vacuole in posterior quarter of body. Macronucleus either elongate and ribbon-like, moniliform or rarely single oval mass.
