Small oval or elliptical body, dorso-ventrally flattened bearing relatively long cirri and dorsal cilia. 2 rows of marginal cirri and 1 row of ventral cirri. Frontal cirri are absent but there is an obliquely orientated row of transverse present. AZM short, restricted to the anterior body quarter. Contractile vacuole equatorial. Macronucleus in two parts each with as adjacent micronucleus. Only a few species have been described.

Balladyna contains ~6 nominal species, of which 2, B. fusiformis Kahl, 1932 and B. similis Kahl, 1932, were shifted to Balladynella Stiller, 1974. In 1972, I had shifted the latter to Holosticha. All these species have been studied little beyond their original description; their morphogenetic patterns are unknown. (ref. ID; 3925)
