Health and Environmental Safety Research Domain
In order to ensure safety against unknown and unregulated chemical substances and environmental pollution caused by complex factors in the environment, such as chemical substances and microorganisms, and to contribute to the management and improvement of environmental media, we will conduct research in field projects, etc., on the evaluation of human health and ecosystem risks posed by chemical substances, etc., and on countermeasures, as well as on understanding and conservation measures for the dynamics of substances in the air, water, and soil. At the same time, we will promote research related to regulatory science and advance efforts to address issues that are becoming more prominent in environmental policy.
Furthermore, to address emerging issues in environmental policy, such as the risk assessment and management of chemicals and the environmental management of air, water, and soil, we will promote the advancement of risk assessment and environmental standard setting under the Chemical Substances Control Law and the Agricultural Chemicals regulation Act, research on hazardous elements based on international treaties such as the Minamata Convention, practical research on countermeasures for chemical leaks in accidents and disasters, visualization and indexing of health and ecological risks for chemical management both domestically and internationally, tap water quality research and policy responses, the creation of an air emission inventory and atmospheric simulation, environmental conservation, management, and restoration of Lake Biwa, and the development of a coastal environment and ecosystem prediction system that can be used by local governments.
These results will address emerging policy issues in the management of chemical substances and the preservation of environmental quality. In addition, by accumulating and examining scientific evidence for future challenges, such as measures to combat environmental pollution caused by multiple factors, we hope to contribute to the preservation of environmental quality and the appropriate evaluation and management of chemical substances both domestically and internationally in order to realize people's well-being.
