Publication of the Databook on Waste Management in the Republic of Korea and Japan
—A Joint Research Outcome with the National Institute of Environmental Research, Republic of Korea—

The Material Cycles Division of the National Institute for Environmental Studies (hereinafter referred to as "NIES"), Japan together with the National Institute of Environmental Research (hereinafter referred to as "NIER"), Republic of Korea, has released the Databook on Waste Management in the Republic of Korea and Japan. It compiles statistical information on waste in both countries and organizes the data in a format that enables direct comparison. This publication is an outcome of collaborative research conducted under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between NIER and NIES in March 2024.

1. Background and Purpose

Japan and the Republic of Korea (hereinafter referred to as "Korea") are geographically close and share many similar challenges in the fields of waste management and resource circulation. However, differences in statistical survey frameworks and definitions have long made direct comparison between the two countries difficult.
In response to this issue, the Material Cycles Division of NIES, together with NIER, has worked to compile and harmonize statistical information by organizing it around common elements, to create a dataset that enables meaningful comparison between Korea and Japan.
This data book contains fundamental statistical information on waste management in both countries, including waste generation, treatment, and recycling rates.

2. Methods

Statistical information on waste management in Korea and Japan was collected, and differences in survey frameworks, classifications, and definitions across the two countries were reviewed and assessed. A dataset enabling cross‑country comparison was constructed based on a common classification framework, ensuring consistency across statistical items. In addition, explanatory notes were added to each statistical category to provide users with interpretive guidance and supplementary information relevant to Korea-Japan comparisons. These results were compiled and edited into a statistical data book, which is available online.

3. Results and Discussion

・The differences between the statistical systems of the two countries were clarified, and indicators suitable for comparison were identified.
・Characteristic trends in key indicators, such as waste generation and recycling rate, were identified for both Korea and Japan.
・Foundational information was organized to support mutual understanding of institutional and policy developments in both countries, providing a basis for future policy design and improvement.
・A unified format was established to support international comparative studies that look beyond Korea and Japan.

4. Future Prospects

We plan to continue updating this data book by expanding the scope of target areas, refining statistical items, and conducting further comparative analyses. In addition, to support the advancement of a circular economy in the Asian region, we will explore opportunities for data collaboration with countries and regions beyond Korea and Japan.
