    This study simulates the future land use changes based on building stock analysis, combining with feasibility study and impacts assessment of introducing low-carbon district heating systems. The study helps in promoting the diffusion of low-carbon and sustainable urban energy system, as well as contributes to the revitalization of Fukushima Prefecture in local social and environmental recovery. Compact city planning is indicated that substantially enhances the application of low-carbon district heating technologies. Next, more accurate population and building retrofitting scenarios will be developed, and future projection of the progression in power and heating technologies will be considered to verify the scenario results.

    This study summarizes my recent several studies on how to apply technologies in actual urban planning for systemic resource conservation and recycling. The key idea of the presentation is to promote deep decarbonization in energy sector that essentially enlarges CO2 emission reductions in total. Particularly, through several case studies in Japan, this study indicates that guided urban renewal strategies in urban areas and energy symbiosis such as waste heat exchange between industries and urban area would further reduce CO2 emission reduction than normal socioeconomic and technical low-carbon measures.Such ideas and evident in case studies would help in integrated planning and assessment for low-carbon eco-cities during the practice in municipalities.

International Conference of Low Carbon Asia (ICLCA) 2017, The Indonesian government has constructed some emission mitigation schemes, one of which is the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) scheme for the post-2020 emission reduction scheme. This research has tried to examine the impact of those emission reduction schemes on Indonesian economics and how they can synchronise with the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture target to boost agricultural production towards 2030. Using the Computer General Equilibrium (CGE), we tried to construct a mathematical model with which to calculate the impact of emission mitigation actions from agricultural land management. The result shows that every investment in emission mitigation actions can help to reduce the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) loss on some level in comparison to if Indonesia carried out emission reduction without implementing any mitigation actions. It is assessed that Indonesia will experience approximately a 6.92 % (260.8 billion USD) GDP loss in 2030 through cutting emissions by 29 %. However, the introduction of mitigation technology will reduce this. Comparing all scenarios in the model, the GDP loss under INDC2 (implementing comprehensive mitigation technology in agricultural sectors) in 2030 is 2.98 % (260.7 billion USD). One of the most interesting results is that we found no significant impact of climate policies on the economy until 2020. This is probably because even though Indonesia has already published the regulation on emission reduction, in reality, the implementation of the policies effectively started in 2015. Climate-related policy and investment are usually big and timely projects, so the simulation predicted that the impact could be seen after 2020. This finding can be a signal for Indonesia in boosting investment in emission mitigation technologies. Otherwise, it will lead to two probabilities: the emission reduction target cannot be met or the investment that should be made will be very costly and pose a big burden on Indonesian economics due to the very limited period., n/a(n/a)

(2017) Achieving a low carbon city through urban symbiosis: A case of Tokyo Metropolis. 3rd Annual IIES Scientific Workshop, Cities are responsible for more than 60 percent of global energy consumption and three-fourth of world greenhouse gas emissions. Industrial and urban symbiosis can be an effective solution for resource recycling and energy conservation. Numerous studies have verified greenhouse gas emission reduction and economic benefits of industrial and urban symbiosis. However, few research focus on energy exchange between waste management system and urban energy system and efficient cascade use of energy from waste. In this study, we proposed and assessed an urban symbiosis network which integrates municipal solid waste treatment system, district heating system and industrial system. In the proposed symbiosis network, biomass such as food waste, sewage sludge are used to generate electricity, and the residues from the fermentation process are combusted in incinerators to minimize the amount of final disposal. Heat from incinerator is used for a district heating system in residential and commercial area nearby. The proposed symbiosis network improves the exergy efficiency through combined heat and power system, and cascade use of energy such as high pressure steam is supplied to industries, and low temperature hot water is used in district heating. Tokyo Metropolis were selected as a case. Energy flow analysis was applied in order to quantify energy saving benefits of the symbiosis network, and energy recovery efficiency was calculated. Environmental impacts such as CO2 emission reduction were evaluated by employing life cycle assessment. The results showed that the proposed urban symbiosis network and energy cascade use created significant energy saving benefits (up to 5.4% of the total energy consumption) at upstream fossil fuel production process and downstream waste disposal process. The system of urban symbiosis had a great potential of carbon reduction (up to 1.10 million ton), contributing not only to circular society, but also to urban energy system.
