Isolated by Dr. R.R.L. Guillard from Falmouth Great Pond (Massachusetts, U.S.A.) in August 1954 and supplied as an axenic culture by Dr. L. Provasoli.

Narrow culture tube (medium: nutrient-enriched seawater (salinity 14-15 ppt)), stationary, continuous cool-white light (intensity ca. 1.62 klux). Temperature ca. 18 degrees C.

Abnormal ultrastructural features in the Chloroplast (especially the pyrenoid), mitochondria, and nucleus.
