Notes
A bioassay technique utilizing the respiratory response of Tetrahymena pyriformis to intoxication was developed. Changes in oxygen uptake rate caused by a variety of toxicants produce measurable results within 10 min. Although not sufficiently sensitive to detect some chemicals at concentrations within the limits specified for drinking-water, the technique should be more than adequate to monitor the quality of industrial effluents.
