Notes

An account is given of the systematic history of the genus Nuclearia. The genus non-testate amoebae with thin hyaline pseudopodia. The type species, Nuclearia delicatula, may adopt a spherical or a flattened body form. Organisms previously assigned to the related genera Astrodisculus, Nuclearella, Nuclearina, Heliosphaerium and Nucleosphaerium, but exhibiting one or both of the forms represented in N. delicatula, are assigned to the genus Nuclearia. Consequently, the organisms assigned to the 6 genera can be assigned to 9 clearly distinguishable species in the genus Nuclearia. The affinities of three remaining species, Astrodisculus araneiformis, A. minuta and A. marinus are unclear. Many species are poorly described and the assignment of individuals to species rank taxa is rarely unambiguous.
