Notes

Previous results have shown that stock C8 of Euplotes crassus is a mate-killer, and that the possession of such a trait is related to the presence of cytoplasmic, bacterium-like symbionts containing hereditary systems of their own (Dini and Luporini, 1976). Here we report on a breeding analysis which establishes an essential role for the host nuclear genetic system in the maintenance of mate-killing ability. In addition, the data can be interpreted by assuming a multi-locus model involving two unlinked, nuclear genes of different efficiencies in sustaining the mate-killer trait.
