Notes

The normal behaviour of the contractile vacuole complexes of Thecamoeba quadrilineata, Mayorella bigemma and Nuclearia sp. are described and illustrated. Readily discernible differences in the patterns of behaviour are distinguished. These primarily involve the appearance of the contractile vacuole complex during systole. Differences such as those described may render contractile vacuole complex behaviour suitable of use as a diagnostic feature for the identification of free-living amoebae.
