The aim of this study was to describe the position of starlike structures ('sensory cilia') in the pellicle of Euplotes vannus in vivo, using differential-interference-contrast optics. It has been shown that the starlike structures are localized: 1) numerously on the dorsal side, regularly arranged in rows; 2) in groups of 3 or 4 around each cirrus; 3) singly, at the right and left of each membranelle. It is doubtful that these structures have indeed sensoric functions.
