Notes

Although first interpreted as a centric diatom Potamodiscus kalbei Gerloff (1968) has later been shown to be a scale-covered colourless unicell of apparently cosmopolitan distribution but with uncertain taxonomic affinities (Gaarder, Fryxell and Hasle, 1976). Evidence is produced here that the organism is identical with the heliozoan Pinaciophora fluviatilis Greeff (1873) sensu Penard (1904). During examination of a large number of whole mounts prepared for electron microscopy, mainly on the basis of sea-water samples from Danish marine localities, a large number of scales attributable to the genus Pinaciophora have been observed. These scales fall within 10 welldefined taxonomic entities, of which only Pinaciophora fluviatilis Greeff (syn. Potamodiscus kalbei Gerloff) and Pinaciophora spiculata Manton (1978) have been observed previously.
