Notes

Isolated earthworm crop-gizzards bathed in Pantin's saline show rhythmic contractions at a rate of about 3/min. The contraction rate increases when intralumenal pressure is increased. However, when isolated crop-gizzards are bathed in a new saline developed by Drewes and Pax (1974) no spontaneous contractions occur. In situ experiments show that the activity for the crop-gizzard consists of irregularly spaced contractions at an average rate of only 0.7/min. This activity is altered by Pantin's saline, but not by the new saline.
