Notes

Nicola Ricci devised original approaches and techniques to investigate the motile behaviour of ciliates. Central to his studies was the concept of the ethogram and of the ways in which it varies in different ciliates and under different conditions. Examples are discussed of studies on the effects on ciliate motile behaviour of water currents, temperature change, stage in the cell cycle, the presence of toxic chemicals and different properties of the substrate surface. He stimulated and inspired both fellow researchers and students throughout the world.
