Notes

As the study of the early part of clonal life (cultures in slides) does not always show differences in mode of growth between caryonides of complementary mating types in Paramecium primaurelia (Crippa Franceschi et al. 1984), a further study has been carried out on the growth in test tubes. It has been proved that, at reactivity, the caryonides of mating type II show a higher cell density compared to caryonides of mating type I. This confirms that different growth modes account for the expression of complementary mating types (Crippa Franceschi 1981, 1987)
