Notes

The conjugation process in Urocentrum turbo has three pregamic or maturation divisions. The meiotic prophase I comprises the "parachute stage". The pronuclei exchange takes place when these nuclei are in metaphase and it gives rise to a fusiform synkaryon in each conjugant. This synkaryon undergoes three successive mitosis which produce eight nuclei, 4 of them become macronuclear anlagen, three others degenerate and the remaining one forms the micronucleus. The old macronucleus breaks down into two nodes which become pycnotic during the exconjugant bipartition. Simultaneously to these nuclear processes, the oral infraciliature of each conjungant undergoes a reorganization phenomenon whilst the somatic infraciliature does not show any change.
