Notes

Electrophoresis of the water-soluble proteins from seven Acanthamoeba strains has indicated differences suited to taxonomic analysis. Values for the Jaccard coefficient and the simple matching coefficient (SMC) were calculated from electrophoreogram-derived data, and values for the average taxonomic distance (ATD) from zymogram-derived data. SMC and ATD values provided the bases for dendrograms, constructed by the unweighted pair-group method. Phylogenetic trees were prepared from ATD values by the Fitch-Margoliash procedure. Within the castellanii taxon, the closest relationship (ATD 0.37) was found between the Neff strain and its Korn subculture, and the most distant one (0.65) between the Castellani and Singh strains. A. polyphaga OX-1 and A. griffini were shown to be closely related neither to each other (0.68) nor to any of the castellanii strains examined. These findings are in agreement with taxonomic relationships established primarily on morphological grounds.
