Notes

Investigations were carried out into the systematics, morphology and ecology of those colourless flagellates occurring most frequently in sewage treatment plants. On the basis of these investigations an identification key has been worked out. Factors which are of decisive influence in communities of organisms are discussed which arise in activated sludge plants, trickling filters and oxidation ponds, as well as those occurring when sewage is incubated in the laboratory. Of the 54 species of colourless flagellates investigated, 26 are suitable as indicators of water quality and thus for evaluating the performance of sewage treatment plants. A special section illustrates the part played by these organisms during sewage purification.
