Notes

Each of about 40 strains of the Euplotes vannus complex and several other morphologically or biologically similar strains of Euplotes were disrupted by sonication and centrifuged. The resultant supernatant was subjected to polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, followed by staining the gels for the enzymes - acid phosphatases, nonspecific esterases, amylases, and tetrazolium oxidases. With respect to the electrophoretic mobilities of these enzyme systems, the strains herein referred to as different species of the E. vannus complex are very similar. In addition, the results suggest that the relationships between the five species of the E. vannus complex are quite different from those existing between morphologically defined taxa in the genus Euplotes. The E. vannus complex can be considered as a new model of sibling species in ciliates.
