The rear zone of the macronucleus, zones 4 and 3 in Euplotes crassus and Strombidium sulcatum, respectively, is the site of DNA duplication. In both ciliates, increase in protein levels precedes that of DNA. There are also variations in the RNA level in the reorganization band, with the highest RNA content being found in the zone richest in protein.
