Notes

The feeding response of Asplanchna girodi is initiated in as little as 30 msec after prey contact coronal sensory receptors near the mouth. In about another 50 msec, prey are sucked through the mouth into the expanding mastax. Mastax expansion is caused by the opening of the peripharynx, presumably as hydrostatic pressure within this tubular structure is increased by contraction of circular muscle fibers.
