Notes

1. The tubificid fauna of a series of British and European lakes is listed, and compared with the known distribution of species in the world's lakes. 2. The detailed distribution of species within three British lakes is described, and compared with published data on the distribution of species in other lakes. The factors which may affect the distribution of species are discussed. 3. The life-histories of Aulodrilus pluriseta and Peloscolex ferox are described, with notes on the other species present. The limited information available on other species is discussed. 4. The information available on the biology of several of the species mentioned is summarised. 5. The classification of lakes with reference to the Tubificidae is discussed. It is held that most classifications of natural water-bodies are based on inadequate information from a restricted geographical area, and are therefore premature. They may become dangerous when accepted as more than working hypotheses subject to continual review, particularly when they concentrate on a static than a dynamic view of ecology.
