Synonym

Ditrema flavum Archer (ref. ID; 3283, 3693)

Descriptions

Test brown, cylindrical with equally rounded ends in front view; elliptical in profile; ovoid with a small central oval aperture in end view; in sphagnum. (ref. ID; 1618)
An electron-microscopical study. (ref. ID; 2095)

Measurements

45-77 um by 23-45 um. (ref. ID; 1618)

Amphitrema jollyi Van Oye, 1956 (ref. ID; 2233 original paper)

Descriptions

This species differs from A. flavum in several characters, and in the first place by its dimensions. Amphitrema flavum measures about 75 um in length and in about 37 um broad. Miss M.C. Haeck and Van Oye have found in Belgium, in the Netherlands and in the Great Duchy of Luxemburg specimens of A. flavum that were 50 to 60 um long and 31 to 38 um broad, with a length/breadth relation going from 1.55 to 1.75, on an average 1.65, A. jollyi has a length 86-100 um and a breadth of 60-71 um; the length/breadth relation goes from 1.32 to 1.63, average 1.48. The section of the test is broader at middle, where it measures about 30 um, as against about 20 um at the tips. There are no exosomes and the chitinous test is hyaline and colourless. The facies of the new species is distinctly different from that of A. flavum. (ref. ID; 2233)

Amphitrema paparoensis Van Oye, 1956 (ref. ID; 2233 original paper)

Descriptions

This species is on the whole not unlike A. jollyi; it possesses however, a quite distinct neck. The test is hyaline, but of a faintly brownish colour. In dorsal view, the lateral sides are almost parallel. The grains of quartz and various extraneous particles are fairly numerous, but scattered on the surface of the test, so that there are no areas continuously covered with them. The envelope is thick, chitinous, and, as pointed out above, homogenous and of a brownish colour where it is not obscured by xenosomes. The distinct neck, the presence of extraneous particles, the brownish colour, the size and the general aspect differentiate this species both from A. flavum and from A. jollyi. (ref. ID; 2233)

Etymology

The specific name of paparoensis is being given to the new species because the latter was found in a sample that had been collected in the Paparoa mountains and does not imply that the species has to be found exclusively there. (ref. ID; 2233)

Measurements

Length 92, breadth 70, mouth 10 um. (ref. ID; 2233)

Amphitrema wrightianum Archer, 1869 (ref. ID; 3175) reported year? (ref. ID; 1923, 3283, 3693) reported author and year? (ref. ID; 7076)

Descriptions

In outline similar to the preceding form, but always possessing scantily distributed foreign particles; siliceous sand grains, diatoms. The apertures provided with short tubelike external collars. Zoochlorellae present. Habitat Sphagnum. (ref. ID; 1923)

Measurements

Length 61-95 um. (ref. ID; 1923)
