Pompholyx
Pompholyx Gosse, 1851 (ref. ID; 7815)
Class Rotatoria: Order Monimotrochida: Family Testudinellidae (ref. ID; 7097)
ref. ID; 1663
Lateral edges of dorsal and ventral plates of lorica closely confluent. Flat or four-lobed in cross section. Corona without finger-like processes. Two frontal eyespots. Mastax malleoramate. Trophi symmetrical. (ref. ID; 1663)
Notholca orientalis Barrois & Daday, 1894 (ref. ID; 3688)
Descriptions
This species is distinguishable by very depressed body. (ref. ID; 1923)
Lorica almost circular with the dorsal plate having a pointed protuberance in the middle. (ref. ID; 2715)
Lorica egg shaped; divided into four lobes in cross-section. Frontal edge raised into a lobe-like projection dorsally, two elevations laterally and a shallow sinus ventrally. Cloacal aperture situated posteriorly. Egg connected by elastic threads to the posterior end of lorica. (ref. ID; 1804)
This species is very common in ponds and lakes. (ref. ID; 1923)
Measurements
Total length 84; maximum width 68 µm. (ref. ID; 1804)
Body length 120 µm. (ref. ID; 1923)
The dorsal side had a bulge, resembling that in P. sulcata Hudson. The ventral side, however, lacked such a bulge. This produces in the outline of the cross-section three rounded lobes, which are alluded to by the name Pompholyx triloba. In dorsal or ventral view, the lorica does not exhibit any greater differences from that of P. sulcata or that of P. complanata Gosse. (ref. ID; 3257)
Comments
Pompholyx sulcata and P. triloba have never been found in the same waters. The former species has been encountered only in real lakes which are larger throughout than the three waters in which P. triloba has been found. This circumstance suggests that the two species are vicariating ecologically for one anther. No intermediate forms between P. sulcata and P. triloba have been observed, nor between P. triloba and P. complanata. (ref. ID; 3257)
This is similar to complanata, but flatter. Most differed from other Pompholyx having well shaped tubus at the anal opening which passed the lorica posteriorly. Eggs are often attached to this. (ref. ID; 4606)
Type locality
In the plankton of Lake Purumbete. (ref. ID; 4606)
