Descriptions

Circulatory apparatus: In addition to the dorsal and ventral vessels and the two latero-parietal vessels, there is a large supraoesophageal trunk -only slightly thinner than the dorsal vessel- arising in XVIII (?) from the intestinal sinus and running forward. No longitudinal vessels run along the nerve cord which instead is enveloped by a dense network of capillaries formed by branches arising in each segment from the latero-parietal vessels. The oesophageal hearts, each containing a single compartment, are six pairs located in VII-XII and each of them is connected with both the dorsal and supraoesophageal vessels, a pattern which resembles that of Megascolecidae; they are endowed at each end with powerful valves. Even the ventral vessel is endowed with valves in the anterior segments, a quite exceptional condition. This description differs in some details from the one by Jamieson and Ghabbour (1969). The intestinal sinus is similar to that of Drilocrius. (ref. ID; 6024)
