Descriptions

  • Female: Body assumes a ventrally arcuate posture when relaxed by gentle heat. Cuticle apparently smooth. Inner cuticle marked with fine transverse striations. Lip region broadly rounded, set off from body contour by a constriction; 14-16 µm wide and 7-8 µm high. Amphid apertures conspicuous, slit like; extending about 2/3 lip-width. Amphid pouch short, cup-like. Spear 115-122 µm long; spear extension 50-85 µm long with slightly swollen base. Spear guiding ring single, 32-35 µm from anterior end of body. Oesophagus a slender tube expanding posteriorly to cylindrical basal enlargement, 105-116 µm long and 15-22 µm wide. Cardia small, hemispheroid. Nerve ring enveloping the slender part of oesophagus just behind the spear extension. Hemizonid distinct, at the level of nerve ring. Vulva a transverse slit. Vagina 28-30 µm long, extending about half-way across body. Ovaries paired, opposed, symmetrical and reflexed with irregularly arranged oocytes. Oviduct long with a pouch-like structure at its proximal end joining the thick walled uterus through a narrow passage controlled by the sphincter muscles. Prerectum not discernible. Rectum 24-25 µm, less than one anal body-width long. Tail 33-35 µm, with convex-conoid terminus, less than one anal body-width long. Cuticle at the tail terminus thickened (3-4 µm thick). (ref. ID; 7642)
  • Male: Not found. (ref. ID; 7642)

    Remarks

Paralongidorus major n. sp. comes close to P. remyi (Altherr, 1963) Siddiqi and Husain, 1965, and P. capensis Heyns, 1966. From the former it differs in having a more slender body, shorter spear and relatively posteriorly placed vulva (a=55, spear 180 µm and V=40 in P. remyi). From P. capensis it differs in having a smaller body, anteriorly placed vulva, narrower lip region and shorter sper (L=7.24-8.78 mm, V=47-51, lip region 19-20 µm wide and spear 174-187 µm in P. capensis). (ref. ID; 7642)

    Type habitat and locality

Collected from soil around roots of maize (Zea mays) at Bakewar, district Etawah (U.P.), India. (ref. ID; 7642)

    Type specimen

Collected by the author, holotype female and other paratypes deposited with Zoology Museum, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. (ref. ID; 7642)

    Measurements

  • Holotype (female): L=6.40 mm, a=113, b=12.0, c=160, V=41, spear 122 µm, spear extension 72 µm. (ref. ID; 7642)
  • Paratypes (female n=4): L=5.50-6.40 mm, a=100-129, b=12.0-13.2, c=153-167, V=41-44. (ref. ID; 7642)

Paralongidorus oryzae Verma, 1973 (ref. ID; 7642 original paper)

    Descriptions

  • Female: Body ventrally arcuate when killed by gentle heat, tapering at either extremities. Lip region 9 µm in diameter and 6 µm high, set off from the body countour by a slight constriction. Amphid apertures conspicuous, slit-like, extending about 4/5 of the lip width. Amphidial pouches short, stirrup-shaped; sensillar pouches located 30 µm behind the anterior end. Spear guiding ring single, located 25 µm behind the anterior end. Spear 52 µm long; spear extension 40 µm long, with a slightly swollen base. Expanded portion of oesophagus 82 µm long and 20 µm wide. Cardia small, convex-conoid. Nerve ring enveloping the slender part of the oesophagus at a distance of 130 µm behind the anterior end of body. Hemizonid fairly distinct at the level of nerve ring. Vulva a transverse slit. Vagina about 1/2 the corresponding body-width long. Ovaries paired, asymmetrical, reflexed at the oviduct. Oocytes arranged irregularly in the zone of multiplication otherwise they are in single row. Oviduct 75 µm long, with a pouch like structure at its proximal end, joining the uterus through a sphincter. Uterus 35 µm long and thick walled. Prerectum 150 µm, 6+1/2 anal body-width long. Rectum 16 µm, less than one anal body-width long. Tail 30 µm, convex conoid, more than one anal body-width long. Cuticle 5 µm thick at tail tip. (ref. ID; 7642)
  • Male: Not found. (ref. ID; 7642)

    Remarks
