Descriptions

Light microscopical and SEM observations confirm the detailed description of the theca as given by Balech (1956). The hypotheca consists of two smooth plates with scattered pores which are joined by a corrugated suture. The epitheca is very small and mainly consists of a broad flange forming the upper list of the girdle and apparently composed of two plates. In the centre is situated a complex pore plate which appears to have a channelled anterior projection. The girdle is deeply incised and according to Balech (1956) consists of four plates. The sulcus is situated in the right side of the cell (Balech shows it on the left) and has a large posterior plate with the flange covering the flagellar pore. We have been unable to observe the other sulcal plates described by Balech. (ref. ID; 7726)
