Ovulinata

Ovulinata (= Ovulina Anderson, Rogerson & Hannah, 1996) Anderson, Rogerson & Hannah, 1997 (ref. ID; 7130)

Order Euglyphida Copeland, 1956, emend. Cavalier-Smith, 1997: Family Ovulinatidae Cavailer-Smith (ref. ID; 7130)

[ref. ID; 7130]
Comments; We add to its morphological description the first DIC micrographs, which confirm its identity and serve as vouchers for our 18S sequence of the type strain (GenBank HQ121432).
Our phylogenetic analysis shows that Ovulinata parva was previously incorrectly classified in Pseudodifflugiidae. Yoon et al. (2009) recently revealed a novel marine clade that is sister to Paulinella. Ovulinata was not included in thier anaysis; however, these environmental sequences (EF526891, FJ456918, AB275059, AB275100) are close relatives of Ovulinata parva. Niether electron microscopy by Anderson et al. (1996) nor our DIC studies detected silica scales on Ovulinata parva, making it the only known euglyphid testate amoebae lacking them. A second Ovulinata strain isolated in 2005 from a marine environment (Ashiya-hama, Ashiya Hyogo, Japan) by A. Yabuki (available from culture collection NIES2377 (strain YPF501)) was identified as Ovulinata parva Anderson, Rogerson and Hannah, 1996. As its 18S rDNA sequence (GenBank AB453002) differs significantly from ours for the type strain, the Japanese strain is probably a second, undescribed Ovulinata species. (ref. ID; 7130)
