Hemistasia

Hemistasia Griessmann, 1913 (ref. ID; 4898)

[ref. ID; 4898]
Griessmann (1913) described Hemistasia as a highly metabolic cell with (the appearance of) a spiral groove and two flagella setting off an anterior rostrum containing an ingestion device. This genus has been held to be similar to Diplonema (Patterson, 1994) but also corresponds closely in appearance to species of Rhynchobodo formerly classified under Cryptaulax. A recent electron-microscopy study by Elbrachter et al. (1996) detected a polykinetoplast and placed Hemistasia in the kinetoplastids. This position is accepted here, however Hemistasia also shares several unusual ultrastructural similarities with Diplonema and Rhynchopus which were not noted by Elbrachter et al. (1996). (ref.
