Cruzella was mentioned as a genus of uncertain taxonomic position by Patterson & Zolffel (1991). The American Type Culture Collection catalogue (Nerad 1993) lists Cruzella as a kinetoplastid. Cruzella is regarded here as a kinetoplastid (incertae sedis), noting similarities with Dimastigella, though published data confirming the presence of a kinetoplast and the similarity of the cultured organism to the original description of Cruzella would be desirable.
