Body approximately reniform with posterior end twisted. Somatic groove winds obliquely around body back from entrance of vestibulum. Ciliation uniform and complete in spiral rows with cilia often emerging in pairs. Entrance to vestibulum on ventral body surface with prominent semicircular ventral lip which bears a single row of closely set cilia on the left border. Vestibulum deep. Single large terminal contractile vacuole which may be served by 6 to 9 very long radiating canals. Macronucleus ellipsoidal, many micronuclei (2 to 16). Division takes place within a thin-walled cyst.

Descriptions

Resembles T. magna; but macronucleus ellipsoid, about one-third the body length; four to fourteen micronuclei, clustered around the macronucleus; a terminal contractile vacuole with seven to nine long permanent collecting canals; cytoplasm with 3-7 um long refractile rods; in fresh water. (ref. ID; 1618)

Comments

Tillina canalifera Turner, 1937 was described as new, but subsequent examinations by several investigators confirm Beers' decision (1945) to synonymize this latter name with Tillina magna Gruber. Turner distinguished Tillina canalifera from Tillina magna primarily by the number of ectoplasmic channels which joined the contractile vacuole. This number is variable in strains of Tillina magna and it overlaps the range diagnostic for Tillina canalifera. (ref. ID; 4030)

Synonym

Pseudocolpoda cochlearis ciencowskii Ilovaisky, 1921 (ref. ID; 1622)

Descriptions

Macronucleus oval to rod-shape; micronuclei vesicular, highly variable in number (2-16); a contractile vacuole terminal, with six long collecting canals; division cyst produces four individuals; in stagnant water and also coprozoic. (ref. ID; 1618)
The dimensions of the rod-shaped or ellipsoid macronucleus of the trophont of Tilina magna vary depending on the stage of the cell cycle: length, from 30 to 70 um, width. from 10 to 30 um. The structure of the macronucleus is alveolar: its chromatin parts are separated one from another by a net of Felgen-negative nucleolar material. (ref. ID; 7676)

Cyst
The ultrastructure study of resting cysts. (ref. ID; 4807)
Resting cysts of Tillina magna are spheres with a smooth surface. Generally, from the outside they are covered with a sticky, probably mucuous, layer which is used for their attachment to the substrate and with each other. Dimensions of cysts may be very different. The cyst wall of examined clones is brownish-grey or black. Electron microscopic investigation. (ref. ID; 4835)

Measurements

180-200 um long (Gruber), up to 400 um long (Bresslau). (ref. ID; 1618)
