Free-swimming with a barrel-shaped body which never settles on a substratum of develops a stalk. The anterior peristome is directed forwards as the cell swims and possesses 2 ciliary wreaths (membranelles) which wind anticlockwise to the cytostome. Epistomial membrane absent but at the posterior end there is a permanent aboral ring of cilia. The macronucleus is C-shaped. The genus is most easily mistaken for Opisthonecta which possesses an epistomial membrane on the peristome. It could also be confused with Hastatella and Astylozoon which is without an aboral ring of cilia.
