Rhynchophria

Rhynchophria Collin, 1909 (ref. ID; 2013)

Class Kinetofragminophora: Subclass Suctoria: Order Suctorida: Suborder Evaginogenina (ref. ID; 2013)

[ref. ID; 2013]
Body curved ellipsoid shape without a lorica but with a pellicle. Mounted on a short striated stalk. Few large mobile retractile tentacles at apical end which usually consist of a single main long tentacle vacuoles with canals leading through the pellicle. The macronucleus is band-like and budding is invaginative. Originally found by Collin (1909) growing on the elytra of Hydrophilus piceus who spelt the generic name as Rhynchophria in his description. Subsequently Collin (1912) and others have misspelt the name as Rhynchophrya. Most easily confused with Discophrya which does not have long retractile tentacles and Peridiscophrya which has neither retractile tentacles nor a real stalk.
