Class Polyhymenophora: Subclass Spirotricha: Order Heterotrichida: Suborder Heterotrichina (ref. ID; 2014)

[ref. ID; 2014]
Uniformly ciliated body elongate, medium to large (100-200 um long), worm-like. Terminal pole bluntly truncated, anterior slightly pointed. Not pigmented but may contain zoochlorellae in cytoplasm or purple bacteria in food vacuoles. The pellicle striated longitudinally but with no marked contractility. The AZM extends less than half the length of the body on the left edge. Undulating membrane absent but there are 2 rows of cilia on the right edge of the peristome. Single large posterior contractile vacuole without a long collecting canal. Macronucleus spherical and centrally placed. Sapropelic. Genus most easily confused with Blepharisma which has an undulating membrane rather than 2 rows of cilia on the right of the peristome and which is pigmented (pink to red).
