Proplectella

Proplectella Kofoid & Campbell, 1929

[ref. ID; 3596]
Lorica urn- or vase-shaped, having an inner collar formed through a thickening and inward projection of the wall; outer collar rarely seen; aboral region usually rounded or conical with a pointed aboral end, occasionally flattened; wall trilamellate, hyaline without ornamentation on the surface, thickened at the basal portion of the inner collar, becoming thin rapidly on the oral margin, but gradually towards the aboral end. The species of Proplectella are generally eupelagic and found in warm currents, but are rare in cold and neritic waters. (ref. ID; 3596)

Proplectella biorbiculata Hada, 1938 (ref. ID; 3597 original paper, 4046)

Descriptions

Lorica 1.45 oral diameters in length; oral margin very slightly flaring; inner collar weakly developed, outer one somewhat erect below the oral rim; bowl with two expansions, nearly equal to each other in diameter (1.2 oral diameters), located respectively at the points of the anterior one-third and the posterior one-third of the lorica; aboral region broadly convex conical (110-135 degrees) to a round aboral end; wall not remarkably thickened at the lower part of the inner collar, gradually thinning from the collar to the aboral end. (ref. ID; 3597)
The wall appears thickened throughout, except of a thinner anterior rim. The lorica is bluntly pointed at the posterior end. (ref. ID; 4046)

Comments

The new species differs from P. biangulata Kofoid & Campbell in having stouter proportions and a wide aperture. This new species seems to be more or less related to Cricundella in respect of possession of two expansions and the poorly developed inner collar. (ref. ID; 3597)

Measurements

Length 45; oral diameter 31 um. (ref. ID; 3597)
The dimensions of the lorica are: length 45-52, oral width 31.5+/-2.1 um (n=4). (ref. ID; 4046)

Proplectella claparedei (Entz) Kofoid & Campbell (ref. ID; 3597) reported author and year? (ref. ID; 4464)

Descriptions

Lorica elongate ovate, 1.6-1.8 oral diameters in length; oral margin showing a trace of erectness; inner collar narrowing to its least diameter of 0.81-0.85 oral diameters at the point of the anterior 1.4-1.8 of the total length; bowl ellipsoidal, broadest a little below the middle of the lorica, its greatest transdiameter 1.21-1.25 oral diameters; aboral end hemispherical. (ref. ID; 3597)

Comments

The species differs from P. fastigata (Jorgensen) and P. ovata (Jorgensen) in its smooth contour and from P. perpusilla Kofoid & Campbell in being larger in size and more slender in form. (ref. ID; 3597)

Measurements

Length 63-72; oral diameter 36-41; greatest transdiameter 46-50 um. (ref. ID; 3597)

Proplectella expolita Hada, 1932 (ref. ID; 3596, 3606 original paper)

Descriptions

Lorica consisting a short tubular collar and a spherical bowl, 2.0-2.3 oral diameters in length; collar 0.30-0.34 of the total length; bowl 1.9 oral diameter in transdiameter; aboral end broadly rounded. (ref. ID; 3596)
Lorica stout flask-shaped, with a well-developed outer collar, 2.00-2.58 oral diameters in length; suboral region subcylindrical, thinning outwardly to a sharp oral rim, its length 0.30-0.33 of the total length; bowl generally subspherical, sometimes broadly ovate, 1.5-2.0 oral diameters in transdiameter; aboral end usually hemispherical or widely rounded, occasionally showing weakly a trace of bluntly pointing; wall thickened at the basal part of the collar, thinning gradually towards the aboral end, about 0.15 of the oral diameter in thickness in the thickest wall of the collar. (ref. ID; 3606)

Comments

The species differs from other species of Proplectella in having a well-developed outer collar. (ref. ID; 3596)
Differs from all other species of Proplectella in having the conspicuous collar and from Undella californiensis Kofoid & Campbell in the structure of the wall which is uniform in thickness in that species, but in this species is thickest at the lower part of the collar and thinnest at the aboral end. (ref. ID; 3606)

Measurements

Length 55-58; oral diameter 25-27; length of the collar 16-20; transdiameter of the bowl 47-50 um. (ref. ID; 3596)
Length 66(56-76); oral diameter 27(24-30); transdiameter of the bowl 49(44-52) um. (ref. ID; 3606)

Proplectella perpusilla Kofoid & Campbell (ref. ID; 3597, 4046)

Descriptions

Lorica pot-shaped, 1.5 oral diameters in length; collar cylindrical externally, narrowing internally (38 degrees) to the inner constriction situated in the anterior 0.18 of the total length, its shortest inner diameter 0.8 oral diameter; bowl globose, broadest near the middle of the lorica, its greatest transdiameter 1.3 oral diameters, aboral end broadly rounded. (ref. ID; 3597)
The lorica is hyaline and rounded aborally. It is widest in the middle narrowing anteriorly to a very slight flare at the oral rim. (ref. ID; 4046)

Comments

The species differs from P. claparedei (Entz) and P. globosa (Brandt) in being smaller and having a more or less marked outer collar. (ref. ID; 3597)

Measurements

Length 44; oral diameter 29; greatest transdiameter 37 um. (ref. ID; 3597)
One specimen was found and examined in SEM. The oral width was ~24 um. (ref. ID; 4046)
