Body shape ovoid to cylindrical. Oral aperture rounded, apical and surrounded by long cilia. Pellicle rigid, longitudinally ribbed in some species. Somatic ciliature reduced in central region, cilia present on anterior and posterior quarters of body only. Caudal cilium present. Macronucleus spherical in center or anterior half of cell. Single contractile vacuole in posterior region.
