Paralagenophrys

Paralagenophrys Clamp, 1987 (ref. ID; 4241 original paper)

[ref. ID; 4241]
Lorica aperture and edge of peristomial lip oriented approximately 45 degrees to right with respect to transverse axis of body and lorica. Structure of lorica aperture and edge of peristomial lip as in Lagenophrys. Position of trochal band of kinetosomes as in Lagenophrys. Second type division not observed, probably absent. (ref. ID; 4241)
Type species; Paralagenophrys singularis (Kellicott, 1887) n. comb. (ref. ID; 4241)

Descriptions

Lorica hemispheiroidal, suboval in dorsal view, longer than wide, with greatest diameter along axis running obliquely from upper left to lower right areas of lorica. Lorica rim unthickened. Lorica aperture located near anterior margin of lorica. Lips of lorica aperture tall; with curved, smooth, unthickened edges. Lips of aperture separated by shallow notch at left, by deep notch at right. Lips of aperture approximately 1/2 as wide as lorica. Infraciliature of peniculi as follows. Rows of P1 approximately equal in length, ending at cytostome. Row 1 of P2 much longer than other rows of P2, extending to point approximately midway between distal curvature of P1 and distal end of P1; rows 2 and 3 of P2 approximately equal in length, ending a distal curvature of P1. Peniculus 3 with two rows. Row 1 of P3 longer than row 2 of P3, with proximal end beginning moderate distance before proximal end of row 2 of P3. Rows of P3 parallel for entire length, extending almost to cytostome, ending at same point. Macronucleus elongate, cylindroid, curving sharply at point slightly to right of center, located in approximate center of body, nearly spanning width of body. Left arm of macronucleus nearly straight or slightly curved; end of left arm thickened, clavate. Right arm of macronucleus, slightly curved, lying along right edge of body, conforming to curve of edge of body. Micronucleus large, ovoid, usually located near right arm of macronucleus, rarely near left arm of macronucleus. (ref. ID; 4241)

Representative material

Five slides of material from a locality in North Carolina will be deposited in the International Protozoan Type Slide Collection at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. The redescription of P. singularis and establishment of Paralagenophrys n. g. are based on this material. (ref. ID; 4241)
