Paraholosticha

Paraholosticha Kahl, 1932 (ref. ID; 2014) (see: ref. ID; 3593)

Class Polyhymenophora: Subclass Spirotricha: Order Hypotrichida: Suborder Stichotrichina: Family Urostylidae (ref. ID; 2014)

[ref. ID; 2014]
Flexible, dorso-ventrally flattened oval body. 2 marginal and 2 parallel, slightly oblique rows of ventral cirri. Transverse cirri absent. Frontal cirri consist of a wreath of strong cirri paralleling the anterior arc of the AZM, plus 2 shorter oblique rows of smaller cirri. Peristome extends about halfway down body. Macronucleus in two parts, one anterior, one posterior each with an adjacent micronucleus. Sometimes found in moss. Several species have been described. Jankowski (1979) reviews the nomenclatural problems associated with this genus.

Paraholosticha is characterized by 4 longitudinal rows of cirri, occasional transverse cirri, unique coronal cirri, and absence of midventral cirri. Morphogenesis of ciliature occurs while the ciliate is encysted. Such features suggest sufficient dissimilarity from other hypotrichs to warrant placement of Paraholosticha in a separate family.
