Body shape oval (rarely sickle shape) in outline. Laterally compressed, encased in rigid pellicle which has longitudinal ridges and furrows. Somatic cilia sparse but uniformly distributed. Oral aperture lies at the base of a deep rounded indentation which is situated in the anterior third of the body. Both edges of the indentation are lined with a row of cilia. No cytopharyngeal basket present. There is a single contractile vacuole which is terminal. Rare, described once only from soils in Italy.
